MEL O'CALLAGHAN

Born in 1975 in Sydney, Australia.
Lives and works in Paris, France.

Mel O'Callaghan uses film, performance, painting and sculptural installation to focus on the generative and transformative possibilities of physical and psychological thresholds. She transforms assemblages of gestures and objects into poetic and ritualistic embodiments of the individual and collective sets of practices, psychologies and motivations that characterise aspects of the human condition. Looking closer at ritual and its role in attaining transformative states, the artist delineates the body as the site where not only physical labour is articulated and performed, but also where introspection and meditation, as action, occur. In gesture and motivation, her work can be seen as a type of destruction in order to create, mirroring nature's cycle of death and renewal.
